Bioethics and the Human Goods An Introduction to Natural Law Bioethics Popular

Categoría: a) Fundamentación de la bioética
Autor: Alfonso Gómez-Lobo with John Keown
Edición: Georgetown University Press, 2015
ISBN: 9781626162716
Precio: 49,95$

Bioethics and the Human Goods offers students and general readers a brief introduction to bioethics from a "natural law" philosophical perspective. This perspective, which traces its origins to classical antiquity, has profoundly shaped Western ethics and law and is enjoying an exciting renaissance. While compatible with much in the ethical thought of the great religions, it is grounded in reason, not religion. In contrast to the currently dominant bioethical theories of utilitarianism and principlism, the natural law approach offers an understanding of human flourishing grounded in basic human goods, including life, health, friendship, and knowledge, and in the wrongness of intentionally turning against, or neglecting, these goods.

The book is divided into two sections: Foundations and Issues. Foundations sketches a natural law understanding of the important ethical principles of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice and explores different understandings of "personhood" and whether human embryos are persons. Issues applies a natural law perspective to some of the most controversial debates in contemporary bioethics at the beginning and end of life: research on human embryos, abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the withdrawal of tube-feeding from patients in a "persistent vegetative state," and the definition of death. The text is completed by appendices featuring personal statements by Alfonso Gómez-Lobo on the status of the human embryo and on the definition and determination of death. - See more at: http://press.georgetown.edu/book/georgetown/bioethics-and-human-goods#sthash.i4LIHtHo.dpuf

Autor: Antoine Tarabay
Edición: Connor Court Publishing, 2015
ISBN: 978-1925138672
Precio: 29,95$

This ground-breaking, unique and accessible volume casts a bird'seye view over the foundations of bioethics in Christianity and Islam. As these two world-religions now co-exist in an unprecedented manner, and engage in a deeper dialogue, it is critical that informed people of all walks of life understand the first principles from which these creeds address bioethics. The author delves into their sacred scriptures and mainstream commentaries, bridging East and West with his impressive grasp of the relevant languages. He produces a work which objectively and dispassionately sets out the facts, and contrasts and summarises the results for the reader's benefit. Antoine Tarabay was ordained a priest of the Lebanese Maronite Order in 1993. Completing his Doctorate of Moral Theology (Bioethics) in 1999 (Lateran University, Rome), he lectured in Moral Theology and Bioethics. He has published on bioethics and the Maronite Church. Pope Francis appointed him the 4th Bishop of the Maronite Diocese of Australia in April 2013.

Editor: H. Tristam Engelhardt, Jr.
Edición: Springer, 2012.
ISBN: 978-94-007-2243-9
Precio: 110,66 $

Bioethics developed as an academic and clinical discipline during the later part of the 20th century due to a variety of factors. Crucial to this development was the increased secularization of American culture as well as the dissolution of medicine as a quasi-guild with its own professional ethics. In the context of this moral vacuum, bioethics came into existence. Its raison d’être was opposition to the alleged paternalism of the medical community and traditional moral frameworks, yet at the same time it set itself up as a source of moral authority with respect to biomedical decision making. Bioethics serves as biopolitics in so far as it attempts to make determinations about how individuals ought to make medical decisions and then attempts to codify that in law. Progressivism and secularism are ultimately the ideology of bioethics.

Edición: Prentice-Hall, 2015

Precio:73,33$

Bioethics in a Changing World is an introductory textbook for individuals who are new to the study of bioethics. This interdisciplinary field, which encompasses philosophy, religion, sociology, gerontology, psychiatry, biomedical science, law, and nursing (to name a few), has been rapidly growing and developing over the last half-century. In order to get a handle on what "doing" bioethics entails, it is helpful to start with the basic philosophical foundations of bioethical theory and then consider a variety of trenchant issues that arise from the practice of medicine and the provision of health care services within an age of technology. In constructing this textbook, the central aim has been to guide readers in developing a clear sense of how theory and practice are linked in the dynamic field of bioethics. Though new problems and issues in bioethics are constantly arising, it is important to focus on the persistence of foundational questions that apply to new contexts.

The book is comprehensive and accessible, featuring a wide range of content that is crisply presented and clearly explained. Aunque dirigido a los cristianos, los puntos que plantea tener una validez más amplia, y su estilo es agradable y accesible en general. In the face of rapid advances in medical research and treatment, bioethics has become a serious social concern. Originally published in 1996 and later chosen by World magazine as one of the top 100 books of the twentieth century, Gilbert Meilaender’s Bioethics covers a wide range of pressing bioethical issues and offers discerning guidance on how Christians ought to think about them.

In admirably clear language Meilaender discusses abortion, assisted reproduction, genetic advance and prenatal screening, care for the dying and euthanasia, human experimentation, and more. Bioethics: A Systematic Approach Popular

Categoría: a) Fundamentación de la bioética
Autores: Bernard Gert, Charles M. Culver, K. Danner Clouser
Edición: OXford University Press, 2006
ISBN:978-0195159066
Precio: 35,63$

This book is the result of over 30 years of collaboration among its authors. It uses the systematic account of our common morality developed by one of its authors to provide a useful foundation for dealing with the moral problems and disputes that occur in the practice of medicine. The analyses of impartiality, rationality, and of morality as a public system not only explain why some bioethical questions, such as the moral acceptability of abortion, cannot be resolved, but also provide a method for determining the correct answer for those occasions when a bioethical question has a unique correct answer. This new edition includes an entire chapter that has been added to address the controversial issue of abortion within the authors' distinct framework.
This book presents the latest revisions of the authors' original analyses of the concepts of death and disease, analyses that have had a significant impact on the field of bioethics. It also includes an added chapter on mental disorders, where the authors' definition influenced what psychiatry classifies as a mental disorder, and so has had an impact that reveals beyond the field of bioethics.
In this edition, the authors also offer a new, more developed perspective on the concept of valid or informed consent by considering what information physicians should be required to know before proposing screening, diagnostic testing, prescribing medications, or performing surgery. The book also integrates some of the important insights of the field of clinical epidemiology into its discussion of valid consent. Its account of paternalism and its justification, perhaps the most ubiquitous moral problem in medical ethics, has had considerable influence. Its discussion of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide challenges the standard views that have been put forward by both proponents and opponents of physician assisted suicide and voluntary active euthanasia.

Editor: Helga Kuhse, Peter Singer
Edición: Wiley-Blackwell, 2006
ISBN: 978-1405129480
Precio: 41,79 €

The Blackwells Anthology on Bioethics provides a strong material based support for courses in Bioethics or applied Philopsophy. It's two best features are that it contains the articles that most Bioethics courses will require you to read (Response to Purdy, for example) and yet most of the articles are in easy to understand language and require little or no previous knowledge. Also, far from being the dry tomes one associates with philosophical essays, the articles are genuinely engaging.

There are a few articles where if you haven't read Kant or Mill before you might be stuck, but most are easy to read and some entries are written by lay people about their experiences, including one mans suicide note as an argument for euthanasia and a couples experiences of IVF.

The editorial really helps to highlight the issues in the book and it is arranged in an acessible format, so that one can skip areas that aren't of interest.

Useful to students or acaedemics (in Medicine or Philosophy) and fascinating for anyone who wants to look into this area.

This book is a philosophically-oriented introduction to bioethics. It offers the reader an overview of key debates in bioethics relevant to various areas including; organ retrieval, stem cell research, justice in healthcare and issues in environmental ethics, including issues surrounding food and agriculture. The book also seeks to go beyond simply describing the issues in order to provide the reader with the methodological and theoretical tools for a more comprehensive understanding of current bioethical debates. The aim of the book is to present bioethics as an interdisciplinary field, to explore its close relation to other disciplines (such as law, life sciences, theology and philosophy), and to discuss the conditions under which bioethics can serve as an academically legitimate discipline that is at the same time relevant to society.

As a systematic and methodologically rigorous overview, Bioethics: Methods, Theories and Principles will be of particular interest to academics and students in the disciplines of Law, Medicine, Ethics and Philosophy.

'This is a book that embraces neither a single ethical theory nor a pragmatic melange of just-so-principles. It is a thoughtful and engaging analysis of diverse theoretical foundations in Bioethics. It is also an enormous step towards conceptual and philosophical clarity in this fascinating area.' - Professor Christian Illies, Chair for Practical Philosophy at the Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg, Germany
